The Magic Whip” is an ancient Chinese folk tale that tells the story of a farmer’s daughter who confronts a powerful emperor whose intention is to destroy the South China Sea by filling it up with rocks from the mountains.

Solo for clarinet is a lyrical piece that explores Boulez’s theory of “tropes,” a pitch structure designed to move beyond the limits of serialism.  

In the Av-horachamim mode: the Synagogal mode for prayer in cantorial improvisation with musical roots in Eastern European song.
