Rasikapriya is the Sanskrit name of the last of the 72 mela ragas in South Indian music. There are over 2000 ragas in South Indian music—each derived from one of the 72 parent ragas. I’ve always been interested in the linear beauty of Indian music; rasikapriya is one of my favorite ragas with the scale: C D# E F# G A# B C. I have had the opportunity to study South Indian music in Chennai, and to work with veena and vocal artist Nirmala Rajasekar on projects that include works for string quartet, chorus and orchestra. Rasikapriya is written for alto flute and viola and dedicated to flautist Laura Falzon.
